  • Sparrow Art Space 36 4 Street Northeast Calgary, AB, T2E 3R7 Canada (map)

Within the realm of industrial growth, one cannot escape the interconnected tapestry that weaves together the essence of our progression. This intricate dance between the sinews of Mother Nature and the binding force of cultural consumerism unfolds as a poignant narrative, spotlighting the inexorable depletion of our environment in the name of industry. While the physical presence of wood may be absent, its essence persists, metamorphosing through the crucible of hot casting into naught but ashes—a resounding testament to the toll levied upon our natural world. In stark contrast, the glass, emblematic of "Industry" itself, embodies its essence through destruction, encapsulating the corrosive impact of ceaseless consumerism.

These revelations, born from the transformative crucible of wood's destruction, take on distinct forms within each individual glass casting, each articulating the understated beauty of a singular moment. As these two materials engage in their elemental dance, the dichotomy between them is laid bare, accentuating the immutable nature of glass and its remarkable capacity to assume unfamiliar forms while retaining an unbroken communion with light.

In the profound exploration of "Umbra," the concept of Planned Obsolescence takes center stage, casting a glaring spotlight on the observation that everyday essential objects deteriorate, malfunction, and necessitate replacement with alarming regularity. The toll exacted by this phenomenon extends far beyond the confines of our wallets; it casts a shadow over the very fabric of our existence. What was once a "one-time purchase" half a century ago now stands tainted by obsolescence. It is an endeavor beyond comprehension to gauge the ripple effect this exerts on our mental well-being, our environment, and the legacy we leave for future generations. Planned Obsolescence is a tangible reality, and the path to restoration begins with addressing the glaring flaws and hastiness embedded in every facet of our lives, from the vehicles we rely on for work to the tools that propel us toward success. The list is inexhaustible.

The creation of art objects serves as a potent catalyst, igniting essential conversations on matters such as mental health and the repercussions of our choices in food production and consumerism, all of which exacerbate the pressures of our beleaguered existence. Now, more than ever, it is imperative that we unite and cultivate a dialogue that brings these issues to the forefront. In the words of Gandhi from "The Book of Joy," "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Let us embrace this call to action and endeavor to reframe our collective narrative for the well-being of our planet and future generations.
