This work explores what it means to be seen and be vulnerable without shame. ‘CROMMAEA’ is self-identity, creating our own illusions and distortions, at a macro level, each layer composed by perspectives of the body with the proposed idea of radical acceptance. We want there to be a particular quality of morality felt through the familiar textures and folds found within the imagery. To initiate a compassionate, present, mindfulness and create a curious connection with each discovery. The answer is scary: The truth is these questions are only now starting to come up and the answers are just as unclear as the questions that we should be asking ourselves when we choose to share parts of our lives with the entire world. As the media continues to evolve, we need to evolve with the media and cultivate literacy with our online presence. It is important to have the tools to build intellectual connections during this global lock down and pandemic. Evolve, liberate, what works? Culturally and economically the world has come to slow down, and people are having to listen to their bodies more. Our fast-paced lives are no longer propelling us through each day on fast forward, no one is pressed with the obligation to go to work with a cold. Lockdowns and shutouts have left us with an abundance of personal time and less human contact. People are turning to their computers to get through the lack of interaction as connection is one of our more prevalent human desires. Within the structure of pausing, inspired people have surfaced on social media offering free group fitness classes and free education. People are starting to meet online to share video feeds allowing the world to come together to maintain our minds, bodies and spirits. In Crommaea, they consider the consequence of intimacy and the impact relationships leave on the psyche. To perceive the truth of these interactions relies heavily on the viewer’s own self-awareness. Marta is endlessly inspired by human figures, both the physicality of the body and the interactions it has with others. Using the body as a landscape, her works aim to present macro and micro views of socialization. She focuses on generating various perspectives, detailing concepts through position, circumstance, and experiences. Alana Biffert focuses her energy on concept-driven, large-scale installations; her works surround the permanent impressions left and deterioration of what once was. Oftentimes her attention is driven by details absorbed through nature's discourse. An obsession fed regularly through the pursuit of inflicted and observed reactions. Often driven by process and material. Recently both Alana Biffert and Marta Gorski, exhibited their work 'Crommaea' in the window of Pilchuck's Seattle Gallery. They were both very excited to be represented by such a well known name in the world of glass. This particular exhibition was accompanied by a request for digital content. This gave them a chance to think further about the context of their work and audience which lead them to an interview with Dr Jenniffer Gunsaullus. Both felt it was a great experience and a positive challenge . It created a new format to discuss values, message and delivery. Artists Alana Biffert and Marta Gorski have teamed up to install CROMMAEA, a layered examination of our physical bodies and our digital world. The piece combines carved glass lenses with pixelated photographs printed on vellum, the whole thing bathed in the soft pink glow of neon lights. Stop and look: perhaps through one glass peephole you’ll notice the distorted image of an eye, larger than life; through another, a pair of lips. “This work is about voyeurism, body image, and the double-ended perspective of the lens,” Biffert and Gorski share. “[It] explores what it means to be seen and be vulnerable without shame.” Themes that have come into sharp focus during the past year of isolation and online connection—like mindfulness, self-presentation, and visual consumption—surface in the work as questions and invite further reflection. “In a global grab for attention, we spend our days scrolling for relevance,” the artists explain. “We flip through shot after shot with flaring opinions as humans slip in and out of the land of objecthood… This is an exploration of the digital era, not a criticism. It’s about bridging the gap between the people in front of and behind the screen.” To add richness to the themes CROMMAEA addresses, Biffert and Gorski sat down with sociologist, communication coach, and author Dr. Jennifer Gunsaullus for a digital interview. The three discuss mindfulness, authenticity, and the facets of ourselves we choose to conceal or reveal as we curate our online identities. “As we have thoughts and emotions and worries and fears, we can kindly, compassionately train our brains to pay more attention in the present moment and not judge what’s going on,” Dr. Gunsaullus explains at the opening of the conversation. Gravity and centrifugal force are both vigorous in this process. The procedure is repetitive, experimental and destructive. This work stems from the ideology of breaking away from tradition and finding a new unconventional process. A ladle of hot molten glass is poured onto a steel table to form a circular patty, then this patty is picked up and flipped onto the top of the log. As the glass starts to engulf the wood, centrifugal force is added to the recipe. The wood endures the persistent heat, although perishable, it’s recollect lives on. An authentic consequence of divided energy in a split moment of time. Two materials revel in the release of centrifugal force, preserving the humble, impermeable moment of time in the solid, cold glass. Now transposed into a different environment, transmitting light, established for eternity. These discoveries have taken their physical form, suspended individually and hung from the ceiling as a celebration of water and its pervasive interaction with light. The centrifugal hot glass castings are tension set into place and secured like the spinal cord of time, each vertebra a necessity and universally revolved. The name comes from the Latin language and translates to shadow of a tree. The foundation of my work surrounds the permanent impressions left and deterioration of what once was. In this instance, my attention is driven by details absorbed through nature's discourse. Whether it is the natural attrition in social situations or a wider exploration into the pursuit of inflicted and observed reactions, the unshackling of these observations explore the relationship glass can have with light. The supercilious heat of the glass will always take something away from the wood. Though glass is incompatible with most foreign material, I know that the relationship between wood and glass can be harmonious. The wood is found present in the finished product, embedded and integrated into the glass. Often, I will take the wood and reduce its form to ashes. Knowing it will submit itself to the glass plays a large part in the pairing of these two materials. The wood has no choice, it will succumb to the heat of the glass. It will deteriorate. In a metaphorical sense, this is an investigation into the preservation of our environment and our irrevocable eminence left behind. Each piece of glass was hot poured into the crevasse of a found log. This process was repeated until the wood could no longer hold the glass. These compositions feature containers suspended within vessels, sealed with lids, emblematic of tight confinement. The intention behind this arrangement serves as a metaphor for the tension that arises from mandates and restrictions, an issue that has permeated our lives on both personal and global scales. As an artist, I view the act of creation as a journey through moments of profound introspection. The period of isolation, thrust upon us by the global pandemic, has offered ample time for contemplation. It forced us into unfamiliar territory, where the unknown became our daily reality. It is the artist's duty to unearth the hidden beauty within such unfamiliarity. My work, at its core, delves into the authentic repercussions of the passage of time. The "Preservation" series explores the idea of confinement through containment, akin to suspended memories locked within vessels. These vessels encapsulate not only our freedoms but also our rights. The first ensemble, rendered in monochromatic tones, symbolizes the specter of death. A transparent grey vase stands in juxtaposition to a long, sleek, pointed black container, suspended within, crowned by a white lid. On a global scale, the pandemic thrust us into a state of isolation, a period during which we yearned for human connection, longing for the company of those who matter most to us. Regardless of circumstances, we were denied the opportunity to properly mourn our departed loved ones, as funerals and related services faced prohibitions. Even hospital visitations became limited to a mere one-person allowance per week. These lockdowns have stripped us of control over our freedoms, underlining the profound interconnectedness of human existence—the very fabric of our being. The series comprises various compilations of colors, each representing a universal facet of our diverse cultural tapestry, our collective vertebrate. The inner, suspended vessels in this series culminate in pointed tips—a metaphor for the mandated vaccinations that have impacted our rights and freedoms on an unprecedented scale. The option to make a living, travel, socialize, and participate in society in any capacity has become contingent upon one's double vaccination status here in Canada. This series serves as an artistic exploration of the consequences of these mandates, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound societal changes we've experienced.
